Description:
Abstract:
As a coordinated multi-institution endeavor each state institution was responsible for various tasks which were divided geographically. The five-state region was divided into ecologically and spectrally similar mapping zones. Each mapping zone provided a functional working area for project management, data collection and modeling. Each state was responsible for the mapping zones roughly corresponding to their state jurisdiction.
Purpose:
This dataset contains 24 mapping zones created for the five-state. These were used for land cover modeling and validation.

Process_Description:
Initial research into the ecological, climatic and physiographic characteristics of the region focused on ecoregions defined by Bailey et al. (1994) and Omernik (1987). Bailey's provinces provided an initial starting point for delineating the project mapping zone boundaries, which were refined by screen digitizing at a scale of approximately 1: 500,000 using a regional mosaic of Thematic Mapper imagery resampled to 90 meters. Initial mapping zone boundaries were delineated by one person with the first map containing 73 mapping zones for the region. Through a process of iterative and collaborative steps involving all five participating land cover teams the mapping zone map was reduced to 25 mapping zones for the region. A more detailed explanation of mapping zone development is found in Manis et al. (2000).
